Driving down the A303 to Plymouth today, so stopped off for some lunch in Mere. I’d been past this town hundreds of times but never thought of stopping, mainly because it’s only an hour from home. The lunch was nice but even better, I discovered the memorial to the 43rd Wessex Division, which is located at the top of the castle overlooking the town. The actual castle was dismantled after the fifteenth century, no doubt to provide building stone for the locals, but the earthworks are still impressive. There was also a small memorial to the US Third Armoured Division which trained on Salisbury Plain before D Day.
