Battlegroup – Panzerschreck
Hitze inspiriert mich immer dahingehend.
The match winner of our last game in 2020 was this beautiful model, which I would like to remind you of here in a close-up picture:
The extremely effective PAK 40 that Sven had so ingeniously camouflaged.
Stupid.
This time, too, the gun stood ready to fire on the edge of the battlefield.
We took over the battlefield and army composition from our last game.
Well, I was sure that I would use my tanks better this time.
Luck was on may side and so in the first round I was able to activate 5 units.
Sven’s troops were hidden.
This time I thought I would approach Sven with a pincer movement.
Vehicles distributed left and right, and then forward.
Just don’t let them pin.
Inspired by Sven’s success in our last game, I thought, come on, I’ll hide my tanks behind house corners too.
So my HQ rumbled to the front and I placed it nicely in the inner courtyard.
Since Sven is a fair play player, he looked at me and said.
„For sure???“
I suspected a bluff, of course.
„Yes.“
„Really sure??? You already know that there are such things as portable anti-tank weapons on the German side too ?? „
I blew my fingertips slightly arrogantly.
„I know. But the “Panzerfaust” never hit anyway. „
„Well then,“ said Sven and threw the dice.
Booom; and my HQ was history.
I saw the smoke of the “Panzerschreck” wafting from the windows of the farm.
„Oh man. I’m a fool. „
Yes; a Panzerschreck is really better than a Panzerfaust.
But; I have to overcome the frustration.
I still had enough vehicles.
But Sven was just lurking.
Then his mortars shot.
Direct hit on my AT-gun and immediately after that on my mortar.
Unbelievable.
My tanks searched their way forward and at least they could pin the machine gun position.
Then my infantry, the Achilles, and the tanker came out into the field.
You still couldn’t see Sven’s guys.
Sven wins even without having troops in the field.
I decided now to use the speed advantage of the road.
On the right wing, my tanks were now attacking the German positions.
Here on the right wing, I pushed forward more aggressively.
I moved more units to this section.
Why not turn around and try a right uppercut.
But…
Then they came.
The StuGs.
Well, there were also infantry and the horse-drawn supply wagon.
As soon as I was in the field, the StuGs shot my greyhound down.
I continued to drive cautiously forward, but Sven now also started his units on the march.
So it was no wonder that one of the StuGs caught me in the flank and knocked out a Firefly.
I retaliated and my Cromwell took out one of the StuGs the moment it became active.
The third StuG initially took cover tactically.
Sven placed an anti-tank troop on the field.
I was massaging my tanks now.
Unfortunately, my Achilles was knocked out by a skillful shot from the third StuG.
Two tanks were already burning in this section of the front.
But nothing was decided yet, because another StuG could be switched off.
I held my infantry back. It was too critical for me to use them here.
This is what it looked like from a bird’s eye view.
A German SdKfZ 222 then stabbed one of my infantry squads in the back and pinned it.
Here on the left wing of the battlefield it was very quiet anyway.
I really wanted the decision on the right wing, drove the Cromwell forward, looked around, and booooooommmm, the tank was gone.
I also missed the Beyond the Call of Duty test.
Then it was over.
Sven’s Pak 40 was still camouflaged, the trucks were standing around freely in the field, Panzerschrecks and reconnaissance tanks waited quietly, but none of that had to be used anymore, because my battlerate had burst with the loss of the Cromwell.
Of course, I lost my HQ right at the beginning of the game. But that wasn’t all that dramatic. I had enough material with me to win. That’s why the game was tight for a while.
In the end, the better tactics had won out again.
That was at the moment the last Battlegroup game I had to describe.
Next week there will be another round of M&T.
I hope my readers stay true to me, because of course there will be another desert battle in the summer at the latest. So; the next game will matches the season.
