I am returning to my favorite work by J.R.R. Tolkien „Simarillion“ today and invite you to the first entry dedicated to one of the kingdoms of elves, which is mentioned by Gandalf or Elrond in the Lord of the Rings. I am talking about Doriath, the kingdom of elves located in Beleriand, inhabited by Sindar elves. Thingol and his wife Meliana exercised power in the kingdom.
       More about the kingdom itself next time I leave, and today my Dears, let me devote a few words to Mablung, a supporting protagonist,in many stories in the Silmarillion…

To today’s entry I used the elf models from Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age

Mablung, along with Daeron, came to the Mereth Aderthad bearing gifts and friendship from Doriath. He also served in Menegroth in some unknown position of command. Together with Beleg Cúthalion, was one of the great captains of the Sindar, and were the only Elves of Doriath to fight with the Union of Maedhros in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, as King Thingol would have nothing to do with the war.
       Mablung was was part of the Hunting of the Wolf together with King Thingol, Beleg, Huan and Beren, who later married Lúthien. During the fight with the wolf, Huan is killed and Beren mortally wounded. After the great beast is killed, Mablung is the one to slice open the wolf’s belly and retrieve the silmaril.

Mablung was present when Túrin fought with Saeros over his taunting and restrained Túrin’s wrath to avoid a brawl in the King’s hall. Mablung then attempted to stop Saeros from taking his threats too far and warned him of Túrin’s strength, should he attempt to fight him. Aware that a fight had broken out between the two, Mablung was present at the final play in the drama and tried to stop things from ending badly. It was to no avail Saeros ran despairingly in fear and fell off a brink where a stream ran into the Esgalduin, and struck his head on a rock and died. Later, Mablung was present before Thingol’s throne where he accounted for everything that had gone on between Saeros and Túrin, and later accounts of Túrin’s choice to leave Doriath.

       Mablung became captain of the guard of Doriath after Beleg left to seek Túrin. When Morwen Eledhwen, who dwelt in Doriath at the time, learned of the fall of Nargothrond and that her son Túrin might be there, she wished to seek him out. Mablung was assigned by Thingol to guard her on their way. Unknown to both Mablung and Morwen until too late, Nienor daughter of Morwen, had joined them. Mablung was unable to prevent them both from being ensnared in the traps of Glaurung, the dragon of Morgoth. Mablung hid from Glaurung and then searched the sacked Nargothrond, finding no sign of Túrin. 

Nienor was found again by Mablung, in a trance, by the spell of Glaurung, at Amon Ethir. Mablung then led her back to Doriath, but he later lost her again when she ran off unclad started by a band of Orcs; a result of the spell of Glaurung. Thus she fled beyond the sight of Mablung. Unable to recover her Mablung returned to Doriath, but he spent years afterwards searching for Morwen and Nienor.
       Mablung went to Brethil when he learned Glaurung was there, and there met Túrin. By admitting Nienor was lost he caused Túrin to realize that Níniel his wife had actually been his sister Nienor and Túrin killed himself.

Mablung was the last person to whom Melian spoke before departing Middle-earth. She warned him about Thingol’s Silmaril and to send word to Beren and Lúthien. 
Soon after Mablung was killed before the doors of the treasury during the Sack of Menegroth by the Dwarves of Nogrod.

Dziś powracam do mojego ulubionego dzieła J.R.R. Tolkiena „Simarillion“ i zapraszam na pierwszy wpis poświęcony jednemu z królestw elfów, o którym wspomina Gandalf czy Elrond we Władcy Pierścieni. Mowa o Doriacie, królestwie elfów położonego w Beleriandzie, zamieszkiwanego przez Sindarów. Władzę w królestwie sprawował elf Thingol i jego żona Meliana.

Do dzisiejszego wpisu użyłem modeli elfów z Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age

Mablung (Mablung Ciężka Ręka, Langumá) był elfem, kapitanem i strażnikiem króla Thingola w Pierwszej Erze.
Obok Belega, swojego przyjaciela, był on jednym z największych kapitanów elfów z Doriathu. Razem reprezentowali królestwo na święcie Mereth Aderthad w 20 PE. Często też potem przebywali razem poza murami chroniąc królestwo króla Thingola. Brali udział też w Polowaniu na wilka, który odgryzł rękę Berena trzymającego Silmarillion. Belen i Mablung byli też dwójką elfów z Doriathu biorących udział w Nírnaeth Arnoediad (najprawdopodobniej z małym hufcem)

Wyprawa do Nargothrondu
Gdy Morwena opuściła Doriath i udała się w kierunku Nargothrondu szukać Turina, Thingol, król Doriathu polecił Mablungowi, aby udał się za żoną Hurina wraz z najlepszymi strażnikami pogranicza królestwa. Mablung objął dowództwo nad oddziałem i miał w ukryciu podążać za Morweną i ją chronić. Dodatkowo król rozkazał mu, aby zabrał jak najwięcej informacji na temat sytuacji z królestwa Nargothrondu, będącego teraz pod władzą smoka Glaurunga.
       Mablung jechał za Morweną przez cały Doriath, aż do Sirionu. Morwena nie znając tamtejszej drogi straciła orientację, więc elf zdecydował się ujawnić wraz ze swoim oddziałem. Namawiał ją do powrotu, jednak jej silny sprzeciw spowodował, że od tego momentu podróżowali razem, a całą wyprawą zarządzał Mablung.

       Udali się ku Stawom Półmroku, gdzie w nocy przeprawili się przez rzekę na promie, wychodząc z Obręczy Meliany. Tam okazało się, że do grupy dołączyła Niënor. Mablung nie był z tego zadowolony, ale wykonując rozkaz swojego króla dalej chronił Morwenę, jednak polecił jej, że nie może oddalać się od oddziału.

       Poruszali się powoli i ostrożnie w stronę Nargothrondu przez wielkie pustkowie. Po trzech dniach wędrówki dotarli Narogu tuż przy wzgórzach Taur-en-Faroth. Będąc już tak blisko miasta Mablug prosił Morwenę aby zawrócili, jednak ta nie chciała słuchać. Miał kobietom za złe, że postępują nierozważnie. W rozmowie powiedział im, że zostawi je na Amon Ethir, a on wraz z grupą zwiadowców uda się do grodu.
Gdy znaleźli się na wzgórzu, Mablung z daleka dostrzegł zniszczone miasto Nargothrond, jednak nie widział stamtąd ani orków ani smoka. Wziął ze sobą dwudziestu elfów i zaczął skradać się do miasta, gdzie dostrzegł zniszczony most. Po chwili namysłu zdecydował się dostać do miasta po ruinach mostu. Wtedy z miasta wyszedł Glaurung i ogień ze swojego pyska skierował w wody Narogu, powodując wielką mgłę. Mablung skrył się wśród kamieni, a gdy smok go minął, wszedł do ruin Nargothrondu.
Dogłębnie przeszukał wszystkie sale miasta jednak nie znalazł tak żadnej żywej osoby. Obawiając się powrotu smoka postanowił wyjść z miasta, skąd zobaczył zarys Glaurunga tuż przy Amon Ethir. Gdy przeprawiał się przez Naróg do miasta zaczął dochodzić Glaurung, a Mablung starał się skryć przed nim wśród kamieni. Gdy potwór Morgotha miał już wchodzić do miasta, odwrócił się i rzekł do Mablunga, aby ten poszedł na wzgórze Amon Ethir.

Koniec
Po powrocie Mablunga okazało się, że Morwena i Nienor zaginęły. Mablung prosił króla o dymisję z powodu niewywiązania się z obowiązków, jednak król odmówił. W końcu dowiedział się, że smok przebywa w Brethil. Tam dowiedział się zabiciu gada i o klątwie, która doprowadziła Nienor do rzucenia się w przepaść.
Mablung zginął podczas Bitwy Tysiąca Jaskiń w Menegroth w 503 PE broniąc skarbca przed krasnoludami z Nogrodu.
