Today, I invite you to the first entry about Kobolds! Close cousins of dwarves, of whom I already have a few bands in my collection, that’s why the choice fell on this legendary breed known from European folklore.

       I recently received a shipment from Northumbrian Tin Soldier, which is the home of the excellent „Nightfolk“ series with dark fantasy miniatures. Old School + atmospheric design!
In the middle of these packages, in addition to „Nightfolks“ I got a whole series of „Beardfolks„, bearded gentlemen and women who will feed my ranks of kobolds (Thanks David!).
The first painted two in the pictures below – I added shields to the original models that have no traditional dwarves motifs, but Celtic-Welsh. That’s how it will be in my kobolds team 😉

Kobolds, or other dwarves, ghosts, malicious house dwarfs or gnomes guarding underground treasures.
Kobolds are figures from German folklore, but nowadays we often find them in fantasy literature and role-playing games. Former German miners believed that the kobolds surreptitiously turn silver into the nickel, cobalt, and tungsten that were then considered useless. This is where the name cobalt comes from.

       These house dwarves are usually invisible, but they can appear in the form of animals, fire or people. Kobolds are most often depicted in the form of humanoids the size of children. They live in homes and wear typical country clothes, while those living in mines usually have humps and are ugly.
Kobolds sailing in ships wear clothing characteristic of sailors.

       There are three main types of kobolds in legends. The most frequently encountered group are home spirits of twofold nature – on the one hand performing small jobs for the inhabitants, on the other – doing a lot of malice, if they are neglected.
The second type are kobolds living in the underground, especially mines. They were the ones who were suspected of stealing valuable ores.
The third group, whose representatives are called klabautermann, are creatures that accompany seamen.

       Belief in kobolds is a clear example of the survival of pagan customs after the Christianization of Germany. She was certainly present in the thirteenth century among peasants. Some of the practices associated with the kobolds most probably derive from ancient Greek belief in cobobes, Roman ghosts living in households, or Germanic spirits called kofewalt.

Pierwsza pomalowana dwójka na zdjęciach poniżej – do oryginalnych modeli dodałem tarcze, które nie mają tradycyjnych motywów krasnoludzkich, a celtycko-walijskie. Tak to własnie będzie w mojej drużynie koboldów 😉

Koboldy, czyli inaczej karły, duszki, złośliwe domowy krasnale lub gnomy pilnujące podziemnych skarbów.
Koboldy są postaciami pochodzącymi z folkloru niemieckiego, ale obecnie często spotykamy je w literaturze fantastycznej i grach fabularnych. Dawni niemieccy górnicy uważali, że koboldy ukradkiem zamieniają srebro na uważane wtedy za bezużyteczne nikiel, kobalt, wolfram. Stąd pochodzi nazwa kobaltu.

      Te domowe skrzaty są zwykle niewidzialne, ale mogą ukazywać się w postaci zwierząt, ognia lub ludzi. Koboldy są najczęściej przedstawiane w postaci humanoidów wielkości dzieci. Żyją w domach i noszą typowo wiejskie ubrania, zaś te zamieszkujące kopalnie zwykle mają garby i są brzydkie.
Koboldy pływające okrętami noszą odzienie charakterystyczne dla marynarzy.

       W legendach występują trzy główne typy koboldów. Najczęściej spotykaną grupą są domowe duchy dwojakiej natury – z jednej strony wykonujące drobne prace za mieszkańców, z drugiej – czyniące wiele złośliwości, jeśli się je lekceważy. 
Drugim typem są koboldy żyjące w podziemiach, a zwłaszcza kopalniach. To właśnie one były podejrzewane o podkradanie cennych rud. 
Trzecia grupa, której przedstawicieli określa się mianem klabautermann, są to stworzenia towarzyszące marynarzom.

       Wiara w koboldy jest wyraźnym przykładem przetrwania pogańskich zwyczajów jeszcze po chrystianizacji Niemiec. Występowała z całą pewnością jeszcze w XIII wieku wśród chłopów. Niektóre z praktyk związanych z koboldami wywodzą się najprawdopodobniej ze starożytnej greckiej wiary w kobalosy, rzymskie duszki żyjące w gospodarstwach domowych, lub germańskie duchy zwane kofewalt.
