Staying in historical and Tv series Vikings climate invite you to a meeting with another Nordic hero. On my profile on FB I made a small poll about the title – a story whose hero from among two TV series Vikings you would like to read?
And he won Halfdan the Black. I’m glad, because the protagonist, despite the very interesting character created, has nothing to do with the historical Norwegian.

In the role of the title Halfdan, I dressed one of the received models of Vikings from Footsore Miniatures. The model is my favorite line of Nordic invaders and painting it was pure pleasure!

Halfdan the Black Gudrødsson (Old Norse: Hálfdan svarti, Norwegian: Halvdan Svarte) was born around 820 and was a legendary figure from the Yngling dynasty.
His nickname came from the color of his hair and his greatest achievement was the crown of the king of Norway in the years 840-860. Halfdan was also the father of the first historical king of Norway, Harald Fairhair.


       In 821 his father, Gudrød the Hunter, was murdered, so that Halfdan’s mother, Åsa, took her one-year-old son and escaped to Agder, then the Norwegian kingdom, where she came from. There, young Halfdan grew up.


        In 838, when he was about 18 years old, he was crowned king of Agder. Without waiting long, he decided to expand his kingdom. He divided the kingdom of Vestfold between himself and his brother Olaf, and persuaded Gandalf, king of Vingulmarku, to give him half the kingdom. Then Halfdan conquered the area called Raumarike (around today’s Oslo).  
       Which was the norm in those days, he first killed the king of this valuable region, and later his brother.
This provided him with control over the area and no rivals or contenders to govern.


       Halfdan had a wife, Ragnhilda, a daughter of Harald, king of Sogn. Halfdan’s first son was named Harald after his grandfather, and then he was sent to Sogn to grow up there. Harald, king of Sogn, appointed Harald (Halfdan’s son) as his successor shortly before his death. When he died, Harald joined the Sogn throne at an early age, but he only ruled for a year, and then died of illness. Halfdan, when he heard about the death of his son, went to Sogn and demanded that he be proclaimed king. Because he did not meet any resistance, he was quickly crowned and joined Sogn to his kingdom.

       The three sons of King Gandalf, who had previously given him half the kingdom, arranged a conspiracy against Halfdan and attacked him at night, trying to kill him, but he managed to escape to the forest. Trying to get his revenge, Halfdan murdered two of them, and the third was exiled. Thus, Halfdan received the second half of the Vingulmark kingdom.
After these events he already had a large kingdom and was a powerful ruler.

Halfdan the Black died around 860, at the age of 40, when ice collapsed on the lake at Randsfjorden. His dead body was fished out from under the ice. Because each of the four kingdoms (Sogn, Raumarike, Agder, Vingulmark) ruled by Halfdan wanted to bury such an eminent ruler in his area, the Viking body was quartered into four parts and each of them was sent to another kingdom, where it was buried.

I wygrał Halfdan Czarny. Ciesze się, gdyż serialowy bohater, mimo bardzo ciekawej wykreowanej postaci, nijak się ma do historycznego Norwega.

W rolę tytułowego Halfdana ubrałem jeden z otrzymanych modeli wikingów od Footsore Miniatures. Model jest moim ulubionym z linii nordyckich najeźdźców i malowanie go było czystą przyjemnością!

Halfdan Czarny Gudrødsson (staronordyjski: Hálfdan svarti, norweski: Halvdan Svarte) urodził się około 820 i był legendarną postacią pochodząca z dynastii Ynglingów.
Jego przydomek pochodził od koloru jego włosów a największym jego osiągnięciem była korona króla Norwegii w latach 840–860. Halfdan był także ojcem pierwszego historycznego króla Norwegii, Haralda Pięknowłosego.

       W 821 roku został zamordowany jego ojciec, Gudrød Myśliwy, w związku z czym matka Halfdana, Åsa, zabrała rocznego syna i uciekła do Agder, ówczesnego królestwa norweskiego, skąd pochodziła. Tam młody Halfdan wychował się i dorastał.

       W 838 roku, gdy miał około 18 lat, został koronowany na króla Agder. Nie czekając długo, postanowił rozszerzyć swe królestwo. Rozdzielił królestwo Vestfold pomiędzy siebie i swego brata Olafa oraz przekonał Gandalfa, króla Vingulmarku, aby oddał mu połowę królestwa.
Potem Halfdan podbił teren zwany Raumarike (okolice dzisiejszego Oslo).
Co było normą w tamtych czasach, najpierw zabił króla tego cennego rejonu, a później jego brata.
Zapewniło mu to kontrolę nad okolicą i brak rywali i pretendentów do rządzenia.

       Halfdan miał żonę Ragnhildę, córkę Haralda, króla Sogn. Pierwszy syn Halfdana otrzymał imię Harald po swym dziadku, a następnie został wysłany do Sogn, aby tam dorósł. Harald, król Sogn, wyznaczył Haralda (syna Halfdana) na swego następcę na krótko przed swą śmiercią. Gdy zmarł, Harald w młodym wieku wstąpił na tron Sogn, jednak rządził tylko rok, po czym zmarł na skutek choroby. Halfdan, kiedy tylko usłyszał o śmierci swego syna, wyruszył do Sogn i zażądał ogłoszenia go królem. Ponieważ nie spotkał się z żadnym oporem, został szybko koronowany i przyłączył Sogn do swego królestwa.

       Trzej synowie króla Gandalfa, który wcześniej oddał mu połowę królestwa, ułożyli spisek przeciwko Halfdanowi i napadli go w nocy, usiłując zabić, jednak ten zdołał uciec do lasu. Próbując się zemścić, Halfdan zamordował dwóch z nich, a trzeci został wygnany. Tym samym Halfdan otrzymał drugą połowę królestwa Vingulmark.
Po tych wydarzeniach miał już duże królestwo i był potężnym władcą.

       Halfdan Czarny zmarł około roku 860, w wieku 40 lat, kiedy załamał się pod nim lód na jeziorze Randsfjorden. Wyłowiono jego martwe ciało spod lodu. Ponieważ każde z czterech królestw (Sogn, Raumarike, Agder, Vingulmark) rządzonych przez Halfdana chciało pochować tak wybitnego władcę na swym terenie, ciało wikinga zostało poćwiartowane na cztery części a każda z nich została wysłana do innego królestwa, gdzie została pochowana.
