[ENG/PL] Pict/Dark Age Swordsmen #1 / Piktyjscy miecznicy #1 (Tanatus Miniatures)

Good morning!

Courtesy of North Star Military Figures I started another small project called dark ages Picts and Scots. The first three models described today are from Tanatus Miniatures. In their offer you will find a few more Picts and Saxons units from the period of many of their wars in Britain, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the conquest of Normandy by William the Conqueror.

The element that I will be enriching my Pictorial warriors will be the newly purchased Paint Forge flowers called „Dark Blue Flowers“. I think they are pretty nicely on the stands. I invite you to a brief  of historical figure and photos.

Heroes of today’s entry, the Picts from Latin picti – „painted“, called by the ancient Romans because of the body covered with tattoos.
The Pictish tribes inhabited the lands of present Scotland (north of the Forth and Clyde rivers) between the arrival of the Romans and northern Britain (around 100 AD) and the mid-ninth century. During the Roman reign, two important Picnic tribes were the Verturiones and the Caledonians, who lived on the upper Forth and the Earn.

All written communications by the Picts themselves have disappeared. The remaining single chronicle, rather a list of picnic kings. However, there are Roman, Irish and Anglo-Saxon materials that give us some, though small, insights into the history of the Picts.

In 197 n.e. Kasion Dion wrote about Picts:

They lived in huts, walked naked and bored, had a democratic system of government, and liked robbery, hunger, chill and all kinds of discomfort. The forests were able to survive, eating bark and roots „

The traditional name found in Scotland is Pechs, and now it is speculated that perhaps the name „Pict“ is a distortion of some other word, perhaps the name of the tribe. The Picts themselves called Cruthini. Picts were described as low, bearded men with a shapely body.

In the early Middle Ages, in the period that I am figuratively interested in, the Picts formed a state based on the matrilineal principle of the inheritance of power. In the V-VI century they were christianized, primarily by St. Columban. They lived north of the Antoninus Wall, and in 843 they merged with the Scots under Kenneth I to form the kingdom of Alby. After the death of Constantine II in 943 the Scottish rulers no longer accepted the title of King of Picts.

Dzień dobry!

Dzięki uprzejmości North Star Military Figures zacząłem kolejny mały projekt o nazwie wczesnośredniowieczni Piktowie i Szkoci.

Zapraszam do krótkiego rysu historycznego i zdjęć.

W okresie panowania rzymskiego dwoma ważnymi plemionami piktyjskimi byli Werturionowie (Verturiones), którzy mieszkali nad górnym Forth i rzeką Earn, oraz Kaledończycy.

Wszelkie pisemne przekazy autorstwa samych Piktów zaginęły. Pozostała pojedyncza kronika, a raczej lista królów piktyjskich. Istnieją jednak materiały rzymskie, irlandzkie i anglosaskie, które dają nam pewne, choć niewielkie, wyobrażenie na temat historii Piktów.

W 197 roku n.e. Kasjusz Dion napisał o Piktach:

„Mieszkali w chatach, chodzili nadzy i bosi. Mieli demokratyczny system rządów i bardzo lubili rozboje. Znosili głód, chłód i wszelkiego rodzaju niewygody.
