Visiting a Museum – Prambanan & Ramayana

Es wird Zeit meinen Indonesienbesuch abzuschließen. Er und seine Ursache hat, wie erwähnt, die Monate März und April dominiert. Die Konferenz an der ich teilnahm, wurde feierlich an einer Weltkulturerbe-Stätte eröffnet – dem Prambanan-Tempel. Parallel dazu fand das balinesische Frühjahrsfest statt, das wir bestaunen durften.

It is time to complete my visit to Indonesia. The journey and its cause, as mentioned before, dominated the months of March and April. The conference that  I had attended was solemnly opened at a World Cultural Heritage site, the Prambanan Temple. At the same time the Balinese spring festival took place, which we were allowed to admire.

Unweit des Tempels war auf einem großen Platz der Veranstaltungsort der Festzeremonie aufgebaut. Trotz der mehrheitlich muslimischen Prägung Indonesiens, gibt es doch regional große Bevölkerungsanteile die anderen Religionen zugeordnet sind (Christen, Buddhisten und Hindus). Da Bali in der „Nachbarschaft“ zu Java liegt, ist im Umland von Yogyakarta eine große hinduistische Gemeinde zu finden. Das Frühjahrsfest fand mit allem Pipapo statt und viele geistliche und weltliche Würdenträger (inkl. Gouverneur und hohe Regierungsbeamte) waren vor Ort.

Not far from the temple, the place of the festival was built on a large square. Despite the predominantly Muslim character of Indonesia, there are large regional populations that are associated with other religions (Christians, Buddhists and Hindus). Since Bali is located in the „neighborhood“ to Java, a large Hindu community can be found in the surrounding of Yogyakarta. The spring festival took place with all facettes and many spiritual and secular dignitaries (including governor and high government officials) were on site.

Neben Unmengen an Opfergaben (Obst, Gemüse, Fisch, Fleisch – letzteres auch in lebender Form) für die vielen hinduistischen Götter, dargebracht auf langen Tafeln, fanden Prozessionen mit überlebensgroßen Götterstatuen statt und Musikkapellen spielten (für unsere Ohren) exotische Musik.

In addition to a huge amount of sacrifices (fruit, vegetables, fish, meat – the latter also in living form) for the many Hindu gods, presented on long plates, processions with man-sized statues of gods took place and music bands played exotic music.

Leider hatten wir nur etwas mehr als eine Stunde Zeit zur freien Verfügung, so dass viele Fotos nur im Vorbeihuschen gemacht werden konnten und dadurch der Blick für’s Detail auf der Strecke blieb. Andererseits machten wir hier erstmals richtige Bekanntschaft mit der indonesischen Sonne, denn bereits morgens um 09:00 Uhr bewegten wir uns auf die 30° C zu. Die einstündige Besichtigungstour reichte für einen ersten Sonnenbrand.

Unfortunately, we only had a little more than an hour free time, so many photos could only be made in the passing-by and the view for the details remained on the track. On the other hand, we made the first real acquaintance with the Indonesian sun, because we moved to 30 ° C early in the morning at 09:00 AM. The one-hour tour lasted for a first sunburn.

Mitte der Woche hatten wir noch einmal Gelegenheit in den Dunstkreis des Tempels zu kommen, denn wir besuchten am Abend das weltberühmte Ramayana-Ballett. Nach einem leckeren Abendessen mit Blick auf die kolossale Anlage, erreichten wir nach einem kleinen Spaziergang  den Veranstaltungsort des „Balletts“. Ballett ist eigentlich eine irreführende Bezeichnung für die Darbietung, denn sie hat Elemente von Theater, Konzert und Ballett, die alle miteinander verbunden sind.

In the middle of the week we had another opportunity to enter the temple circle, as we visited the world-famous Ramayana ballet in the evening. After a delicious dinner with a view to the colossal buildings, we reached the venue of the „ballet“ after a small walk. Ballet is actually a misleading term for the performance because it has elements of theater, concert and ballet, all of which are interconnected.

Das Ramayana ist ein uraltes Epos und etwa 2000 Jahre alt. Es handelt vom Prinzen Rama der von seinem Vater verbannt wird und später einen Dämonenfürsten besiegt. Selbstverständlich geht es auch um eine Prinzessin, die Liebe und alle Verstrickungen die damit verbunden sind. Farbenprächtig, exotisch, faszinierend und kulturell anregend! The Ramayana is an ancient epic, which is about 2000 years old. It is about Prince Rama, who is exiled by his father and later defeated a demon prince. Of course it is also about a princess, the love and all entanglements connected with it. Colorful, exotic, fascinating and culturally stimulating! Damit möchte ich diesen „Museumsausflug“ beenden. Eine faszinierende Reise, zwei Weltkulturerbe-Stätten und eine tolle Konferenz lagen Anfang April hinter mir. Zeit wieder an das Hobby zu denken?!
