Three Musketeers: Porthos / Trzej Muszkieterowie: Portos

Hello everyone.

Today next model
of legendary Musketeer from polish Wargamer of legendary Musketeer.

Portos, as well as the recently painted Aramis, will be used to play the Anno Domini 1666 game (more about the system and the gameplay, after painting the models – I’m an opponent and I would be ashamed to play with gray plastic and raw metal).
I invite you to the group on FB, where you will also see the current and announced new models and faction.
And the confident Ukrainian prophetess know that it will happen!

And now the hero of today’s entry, Portos.
One of the heroes of the Alexandre Dumas-father novel series: Three Musketeers, Twenty Years Later, Viscount de Bragelonne. He also appears in the novel D’Artagnan by Henry Bedford-Jones. Actually it is called Christopher du Vallon, after acquiring additional goods (events of Twenty years later) to the name of the next members: de Bracieux de Pierrefonds (name of Portos is revealed by Aramis squeezing friends after escaping from slavery Mazarini). The protagonist Isaac de Portau was the model of this figure.

Portos (Christopher du Vallon) was a wealthy nobleman. It is not known why he joined the Musketeers under the name Portos. I turn to the suspicions about the debts made by our hero. By serving King Louis XIII, he became friends with Athos, and later with Aramis (whom he had taught several thrusts with a sword). Together with them created an inseparable trio. He was also the retainer of the old and prosperous wife of the prosecutor Couquenard, whom he portrayed as a beautiful and rich princess in his stories.

In 1625, as the second, he challenged d’Artagnan’s duel for running around and unveiling his beautiful belt – it turned out that the belt was not entirely embroidered with gold (as Portos praised) in half, in the second Half was made of straight leather. Portos was furious that Gascony disclosed this to his colleagues, challenged his boyfriend to a duel, but first appeared as a second in the Carmelite monastery during the duel of Athos with d’Artagnan – but the duel turned into a joint struggle with the Cardinal’s guards during which Portos fought an unresolved duel. With Mr. Bicaratt. They both wounded, but the outcome of the clash long was not visible. Only Cardinal Guardsman Mr. Jussac ordered his surrender. After this battle d’Artagnan became a friend of three Musketeers.

Later, around 1626, all four took part in the „Queen’s Diamonds“, during which Portos was provoked by the cardinal’s agent and faced him in a duel – but he lost the fight and was wounded in the inn with his servant Mousqueton. The treatment and stay in the tavern was prolonged, and it all cost, and Portos had nothing to pay for, because all his money lost to the card with one nobleman. He hoped to get them from his lover, but this did not help him, believing that another woman was absent in Paris. The musketeers had to steal food from the cellar with the help of a lass, as the innkeeper did not want to give them credit. Only d’Artagnan saved his friend by bringing him a gift from Buckingham, a beautiful horse. This gift was used to pay off debts and take new ones. Upon returning to Paris, Portos revenged himself on his mistress adoring the church at the Mass of Milady de Winter and giving her holy water. Then, in a conversation with the prosecutor, he presented Milady as her long-standing friend. A jealous lover invited Portos to dinner, while her husband introduced him as his cousin. My husband obviously realized who the musketeer was, but he did not let it get to know him. Only he harassed Porthos for his poor dinner and poor wine with a great deal of water. Portos culturally, unwilling to give the prosecutor satisfaction, kept all his remarks about dinner for himself.

Shortly afterwards came the year 1627 and the siege of the Huguenot fortress La Rochelle. Portos, like other musketeers, had to get his gear before he went on this expedition. The lover had to give him a horse for him and a donkey for Mousqueton, but with greed he acquired only the old bun (the same d’Artagnan had come to Paris) and the mule. Porthos then made a lover’s fuss, and this time she made beautiful mounts this time. During the siege La Rochelle Portos and others showed courage. Together with Atos and Aramis, they escorted Cardinal Richelieu to the „Under the Red Dove“ oven, and overheard his Milinda Eminence talk about the mission he had entrusted to her. The next day Portos and his friends took part in the defense against the huguenots of the Bastion of Sts. Gerwaze, as well as in the pursuit and self-over of Milady de Winter. After returning from this mission, he learned of the death of her lover’s husband and decided to marry her. That is why he declined the proposal of d’Artagnan, who proposed him to accept a nomination by the Cardinal in a blancho nomination for Lieutenant Musketeers. After the siege of La Rochelle Portos stepped out of the army, married his widowed mistress and returned to the land of du Vallon.

In the novel „D’Artagnan“, Portos is drawn into Aramis’s intrigue and orders a countess to Countess Helena de Sirle. During this mission, however, he was attacked by three cardinal men. Two of them killed, but the third of them stunned him, took him letters, and then hit Aramis and beat him severely, taking him also other papers. Portos, however, regained consciousness and followed his attacker in pursuit. By chance he reached the inn where he met d’Artagnan, who had just entered into conflict with Count de Montforge, Cardinal’s servant. Porthos then used his friend for the second. The duel was interrupted by Richelieu himself, ordering the fighters to reconcile with each other and summoned the lieutenant to himself by entrusting him with an important mission. On returning to the inn d’Artagnan spoke with Portos, who told him about his adventure and the purpose of his arrival in Paris. D’Artagnan calmed down his friend, but the cardinal’s agent was assassinated by the robbers and killed, and the lieutenant found the fake letters at his body and destroyed them. Portos was delighted to join d’Artagnan and Athos to accompany them to the Marquis de Saint Luc where they had been summoned by Lord de Winter. During his voyage Portos stopped in the inn and drank with Prince Gaston Orleans (his brother’s brother) and his companions. Drunk agreed to join the conspiracy against the cardinal, then went under the gas to the meeting place where he sobered and forgot everything. Then, having learned the reasons for summoning them by Atos, he went to the monastery of Saint Saforin after the little Raul d’Aram, whom Atos had adopted and Portos offered him to be his second father. After leaving the monastery, d’Artagnan joined his friends. All three friends stopped in the inn and, having previously sent Raul with faithful servant Grimaud, confronted the Count de Montforge, who wanted to arrest the boy by order of the cardinal. There was a fierce skirmish during which Portos received a shot at the head – the ball was fortunately only scraped his temple and stunned him. When Count Comic recovered and most people were dead, Atos and d’Artagnan were severely injured. Enraged by this sight, Portos grabbed the beam and killed the survivors of the count, and brought out severely wounded friends from the ruins of the inn. During the fight, however, he lost the miniature of his wife, who, despite the search, did not find her. All three returned to Paris, where soon after Portos arrived his wife and took her home.

Porthos married a few of his acquaintances and added his name to his name. You became the master of the word. Faithful servant Mousqueton had made his landsman responsible and now called Mouston affectionately. On several occasions d’Artagnan had invited him, but the lieutenant of the Musketeers was still busy and had many duties, so he could not take the call in time. Portos lived by his lord. He had fun, feasts, tournaments. However, the neighbors who had all sorts of aristocratic titles passed on from their grandfather’s grandfather often mocked him. Furious, Portos confessed a few to the duel. When the first two were killed, the rest stopped laughing, but she avoided him by a wide arc, which also did not satisfy Portos. After about eighteen years of marriage the ex-Musketeer widowed and began to get bored living practically alone in his beautiful estate (castle du Vallon). In 1648, however, Cardinal Mazarin ordered d’Artagnan to recruit his old companions to the royal guard. The lieutenant went to his friends, of course, to Portos. However, only he managed to persuade him to rejoin the service – Portos hoped to receive the title of Baron. In addition to him, the Mouston faithful had to go to the army to make that decision. When Prince de Beaufort escaped from prison, Portos and d’Artagnan accompanied Mouston to pursue him, tormenting the horses and occasionally changing them to others. They managed to reach the refugees, but were forced to fight his escort – then it turned out to be Athos and Aramis. The old friends interrupted the fight, especially since the Fermi meals and musketeers had to acknowledge their defeat. They returned to Paris with nothing, then secretly met with Atos and Aramis. In spite of the initial disgust, the four returned to the vow of eternal friendship and secretly met in the agreed places. Soon afterwards, as a result of the riots in Paris, the queen, together with the cardinal and the young king, decided to leave the capital of France and hide in a safe place. Portos and d’Artagnan allowed them to bring them and the whole court to the shelter. But because the courtiers had nothing to sleep on, the two musketeers bought hay bundles from the peasants and sold them to the courtiers. However, Portos bought him much less and then he himself had nothing to sleep on. So he had to buy a little more from D’Artagnan, who bought more hay.

Not long afterwards, both Musketeers and faithful Mouston were sent to England by Mazarin to capture King Charles I. Their mysterious Mordaunt was the guide, who turned out to be the son of Milady de Winter, who was the son of Milady de Winter. In England the mission of two musketeers succeeded, and besides the king, their friends took faithful servants to Athos and Aramis. They quickly made it possible for them to escape and the four former Musketeers went to London to help escape Charles I. They tried to take him back from the camp, where he was distracted by his guards playing cards, unfortunately the plan failed because of Milady’s son, Who came with the order to take the king’s immediate return to the capital for trial and … recognized his mother’s executioner. The friends were back on their feet, and in London they tried again to repel the king. Before that, however, Portos killed the Englishman, who spat at the king during the process. Four friends made a new plan to free the king by renting out a sapphire under which they made a tunnel to escape the king’s prison. To be sure that this plan is successful also got rid of the executioner and his helper. However, despite their hard work, this plan also failed, and the king of England cut away the pretending marshal Mordaunt. The four friends grabbed him, but they again slipped away and prepared an ambush on the ship „Lightning“, which their friends would return to France. She was going to fly out to sea on the high seas with musketeers. Fortunately, faithful servants Mouston and Grimaud discovered this, and friends fled the launch ship, leaving their captives at the mercy of the fate (they all perished in the explosion, and Mordaunt at the hand of Athos).

After returning to France, Portos and d’Artagnan split with Atos and Aramis, and the pair headed for London. However, Mazarin knew from Cromwell everything about the involvement of two royal musketeers in the case of Charles I and his friends were arrested. Mazarin interrogated them, then ordered him to shut down in his private castle in Rouen. Shortly thereafter, Athos also intervened there. Portos, however, knocked out their guard guards, and in their uniforms the brave two freed Athos and seized Cardinal Mazarin, also in the castle. Then, together with Aramis and Raule at the head of the Frond, friends went to Portos Castle and compelled His Eminence to make numerous concessions to Fronda and himself – one of the conditions was the Baron’s title for Portos. The conditions were met and Mazarin regained his freedom. At the same time the cardinal with the queen and young king returned to Paris by carriage. There, however, a group of burghers led by Rochefort and Mr. Bonacieux attacked. Portos in the defense of the carriage mortally wounded the latter, who died a dozen minutes later in the roadside church. Portos recognized the man he had killed but could not remember who he was. He returned from d’Artagnan to the inn, and finally there he bid farewell to a friend – Baron’s title satisfied his ambition and decided to return home. He wanted d’Artagnan to go there with him, but the newly banned musketeer captain refused and Portos and Mouston left alone. Before leaving Portos, he finally remembered who was the man he had killed during the riots. He shared the news with d’Artagnan and headed home.

Portos, as a baron du Vallon, spent time fiddling with his neighbors, entertaining and exercising his physical strength, which increased with age. At the same time, he began to suffer from gout. In 1661 Portos was drawn into another intrigue of Aramis, now Bishop Vanes. He personally directed the repair of the fortification of Belle-Isle’s castle belonging to Minister Fouquet. He did it mostly from boredom, because staying in loneliness in his beautiful estate severely hit him. While working on the fortification of the castle, he was surprised by d’Artagnan, who, at the behest of Louis XIV, had to find out who and what fortified Belle-Isle. Portos, without knowing the purpose of the visit, took him to Aramis and the three of them ate dinner. Aramis, however, quickly figured out what was really the captain of the musketeers, and sent Portos secretly to the Fouquet letter, and soon after, he came to him, forewarning his chief. Portos, who knew too much about the case, was forced by Aramis to stay in a house in Paris and not move from it. But d’Artagnan visited him and took him to Planchet’s inn in the countryside. There were three of us drunk to remember the old days.

Shortly afterwards, d’Artagnan introduced Portos Louis XIV, who happily invited Baron du Vallon to a feast where he gazed with delight on his appetite. He also promised to be a chance to become a duke, which made Portos very vain. Soon after, Raul de Bragelonne asked Portos for a second for him against the Marquis de Saint-Again. Portos agreed without hesitation, and even personally went to the Marquis giving him reasons for challenging him. However, when Saint-Again was not willing to duel Baron du Vallon was ready to force him to go to the duel with him. However, this did not happen because the marquis was summoned by the king, so the baron du Vallon stopped by the announcement of the marquis where he was to intercede. Saint-Again, however, told the king everything that had banned him. The opponent did not appear, so Raul decided to go back home with Porthos. However, when he learned that Athos had been arrested for his insult of majesty, he and Portos immediately moved to find him. Eventually they were able to see the prison carriage with Atos inside. The carriage was not in the direction of Athos’s house nor in the direction of Bastille. So thinking that he was about to be taken to the forest and assassinated murdered, Portos and Raul went to help him. Atos, however, and d’Escagnan escorting him quickly explained to his friends what was going on and did not fight. Shortly thereafter, Portos, together with other courtiers, was invited to Fouquet’s ball at Vaux. Baron had to make new clothes, but it was a small problem – he did not like to be touched while taking a measure. Usually he used to wear Mouston-type clothes, which was supposed to keep the ink like his master, but the faithful servant spread out too much, and the clothes for the baron were too large. Portos went to the royal tailor Mr. Percerin and asked him to sew clothes for himself. Tailor did not see the opportunity to help him. However, he came up with a pretending sheriff terminator comedian Molier, who took from Portos a measure by drawing his figure on the mirror and taking it from the mannequins. This idea was very popular with Portos, who did not know that he had used Jourdain as his protagonist in the new comic Molière „The Bourgeois Nobleman“.

At the Ball in Vaux Fouquet he was to be arrested for the embezzlement he had committed years ago. Aramis wanted to prevent him from plotting with Philip, the twin brother of Louis XIV. He dragged Portos into her, telling him that the usurper sat on the throne, and they must now allow the true monarch to return to the throne. Porthos and Aramis (both masked) deceived the king from his bedroom by replacing him with Philip, and they shut Louis in Bastille. Unfortunately the plot came to light, Philip was unmasked, and Portos and Aramis had to flee the country. The first, however, thought that they were going only for his title of duke, which the king had promised him earlier – Aramis did not lead him out of error. On the way they changed both horses at Athos (which they saw the last time) and took refuge in Belle-Isle Castle, which was soon besieged by the army of the king led by d’Artagnan. Aramis then confessed to Porthos the whole truth and offered him to flee France without him. Portos, however, did not want to leave his friend, even when d’Artagnan offered to take him to Paris and pardon the king for his favor. Before the fight, he wrote a testament to Raul de Bragelonne. Then he and Aramis joined the fortress defense. During combat Portos took captive George de Bicaratt (cardinal son of the three Musketeers). Two friends let him go free because of his father’s acquaintance, after finding that further fighting did not make sense to surrender the fort and fled the faithful to the cave from where they would sail to Spain when the situation was favorable.

Unfortunately, the royal guards, including George de Bicaratt, set up near the grotto hunting fox and friends were unmasked. They have long tried to hide their presence here by killing hunter dogs first, then by themselves, and earlier trying to convince young Bicaratt not to alert colleagues that they are here.
Unfortunately, although almost all of the hunters were killed, the guards‘ meals appeared, and the battle became inevitable. George de Bicaratt, having lost his senses after the death of his companions, was the first to set foot in battle, and Porthos, with heartache, killed him by shattering his head with an iron pipe, which he then killed many of his companions. Then he threw on the gunslingers of the king of the barrel of dust. When she was about to explode Portos was hit by a subaggression attack and he could not escape freely. Explosion of the barrel discarded him far, but he did not kill. Portos stood strong and courageous as before. Unfortunately, when he was near the boat in which Aramis and his men were sitting, a huge rock crushed down the ceiling as a result of the explosions from the ceiling. Aramis and his men tried to push the boulder off the shoulders of his friend, but unfortunately nothing was done, and Portos was crushed with stones. Aramis struggled to escape. Portos’s lands were for confiscation, but d’Artagnan persuaded Louis XIV not to do so. Shortly afterward, Portos’s will was read publicly, in which he wrote down everything to Raul and ordered him to take care of Mouston. The despised servant died a moment later, clinging to his master’s clothes, which he had written to him.

Witam wszystkich serdecznie.

A teraz bohater dzisiejszego wpisu, czyli Portos.
Jeden z bohaterów cyklu powieści Alexandre’a Dumasa-ojca: Trzej muszkieterowie, W dwadzieścia lat później, Wicehrabia de Bragelonne.

Dar ów posłużył do spłaty długów i zaciągnięcia nowych. Jedynie dokuczył Portosowi częstując go kiepskim obiadem i słabym winem ze sporą domieszką wody.

Wkrótce potem nadszedł rok 1627 i oblężenie hugenockiej twierdzy La Rochelle.

Dwóch z nich zabił, ale trzeci z nich ogłuszył go, zabrał mu listy, a potem dopadł Aramisa i pobił go dotkliwie, zabierając mu również inne papiery.

Wiernego sługę Mousquetona uczynił intendentem swoich ziem i nazywał go teraz pieszczotliwie Mouston. Oprócz niego do wojska musiał pójść załamany tą decyzją wierny Mouston.

Warunki zostały spełnione i Mazarin odzyskał wolność. Równocześnie kardynał z królową i młodym królem wrócił karetą do Paryża.

Odwiedził go jednak d’Artagnan i zabrał do oberży Plancheta na wsi.

Jednak gdy dowiedział się o tym, iż Atos został aresztowany za obrazę majestatu on i Portos natychmiast ruszyli, by go odnaleźć. Krawiec nie widział jednak możliwości, by mu pomóc.

Portos i Aramis więc (obaj zamaskowani) podstępem uprowadzili króla z jego sypialni zastępując go Filipem, samego Ludwika zamknęli zaś w Bastylii. Aramis wówczas wyznał Portosowi całą prawdę i zaproponował mu, żeby uciekał on z Francji bez niego. Następnie on i Aramis przystąpili do obrony twierdzy. Podczas walki Portos wziął do niewoli pana Jerzego de Bicaratt (syn gwardzisty kardynała znanego z „Trzech muszkieterów“).

Gdy miała ona wybuchnąć Portosa dopadł atak podagry i nie mógł on swobodnie uciekać. Niedługo potem odczytano publicznie testament Portosa, w którym ten wszystko zapisał Raulowi i nakazał mu opiekę nad Moustonem. Zrozpaczony sługa zmarł chwilę później tuląc się do ubrań swego pana, które ten zapisał jemu.
