Your poo is too big?
Sometime I catch myself saying
I have to much unpainted stuff
And I hear and read other people saying
My poo is to big! [Pile Of Opportunity]
or
I’m drowning in plastic minis
and I get that. I really do. In the last 10’ish years more and more minis, games and models have flooded our hobby. And ever since those weird ones and zeros became a thing [3D printing] it all skyrocketed exponentially. People are hoarding STLs and the really crazy ones even print all of them. And now they sit on a gigantic mounting of plastic, resin and filament miniatures and models and don’t know where to start.
Here is a tip:
STOP BUYING AND HOARDING, YOU TOOL!
And yes, that not only goes for YOU but also me. It is, in fact, as simple as that. Just don’t!
- Shiny new crowd funder campaign? Don’t! Do yourself a favour and unsubscribe from the crowd funding newsletters.
- Brand spanking new release for $GAME? Don’t! When was the last time you’ve played $GAME? Or any of your mates? But it in a nice box and store it carefully away.
- New, free sprue with your magazine for a game you don’t play? Gift it away. Immediately! Give it to someone who really is into that stuff.
Tight on a budget for the hobby (like me)? Every time you abstain from buying new stuff put that money back into the budget. Save it for bigger purchases. Maybe the game you actually play and paint will have a big thing coming that would be outside your ordinary budget. Now it’s not. Or less so.
Or, if you don’t want to miss out on the shiny new stuff or want a really complete collection of something, only allow yourself something new if you have finished something old. Finished can be: fully painted, gifted away or sold. It just needs to be gone from the poo list.
And YES I do know this is easier said than done but you must remind yourself of your options all the time. The constant bombardment with new stuff in our hobby really leads to „just buy, rarely play and almost never paint“ if you are not careful. Time is a very limited resource. Even if you’re retired. Or don’t need to work because you got enough money. Nobody get’s extra time. You have one lifetime. Choose your battles. Enjoy the slow grow. Make conscious decisions. Don’t let the hype trains drive you off the cliff.
Ask me again in 12 months how well this did for me. I’ll probably break down and cry.
See you in the next one!
