„Dwarfs digged too greedily and too deeply, until they discovered dark one, from what they had to escape“

           Let us stop, my dear,  in time for the events that took place right after Hobbit’s end.
Thorin was buried deep under the mountain, on his chest made the Arkenstone, Bilbo return to his cozy cottage and the world rolled its own rhythm. But are you sure ?

           In 2989, succumbing to the suggestion of numerous contributors, Balin, the most faithful companion of Thorin Oak shield, was at the head of a large group of dwarves who set out to Moria. He wanted to re-occupy his ancestral seat and find the last of the Seven Rings. Initially, the old dwarf was a success. He drowned the orcs off the mine and started intensive work there. He also assumed the Lord Moria title (only five years). Balin died during a stroll over the Reflected Lake, pierced by an arrow from the plowing orc.
            He was buried in the Mazarbul Hall, which was his headquarters. Balin’s comrades, including Ori and Oin, were soon to die, be killed by orcs. None of them managed to escape and convey the message to the Lonely Mountain, so for the next few years they did not know exactly what had happened to the participants of the Moria expedition.

            This mystery was clarified only during the War on the Ring. Then the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, wandering through Moria, entered the Mazarbul Chamber and discovered the tomb of Balin and the book of Mazarbul. The chronicle of the Balin’s colony in Moria was conducted in the years 2989-2994 of the Third Age, from the arrival of the dwarves to the headquarters of the ancestors until the last members of the group were smashed by orcs. Much of the notes in this book were written by Ori, one of the ancient companions of Thorin Oak Shield. Abandoned chronicle spanned thirty years in the Chamber of Mazarbul. From reading all its contents, they all met the tragic fate of Balin and his companions. The book probably took Gimli with him. It was January 15, 3019.

            In the The Fellowship of the Ring movie show the scene of finding this chronicle, slightly modifying it. Upon reaching the chamber and discovering the tomb, Balin Gandalf removes the book from the skeleton of one of the dwarves (in the novel she is found in the old chest) and begins to read her passages to the members of the group. Compared to the literary prototype they are changed and shorter.

And so much for today. I will return to Balin and travel to Moria again with the other dwarf figurines.

         Zatrzymajmy się jednak moi drodzy w czasie na wydarzeniach, które miały miejsce zaraz po zakończeniu Hobbita. Thorin został pochowany głęboko pod Górą, na piersiach złożono mu Arcyklejnot, Bilbo powrócić do swojego przytulnego domku a świat toczył się własnym rytmem. Ale czy na pewno ?

          W 2989 roku, ulegając sugestiom licznych współplemieńców, Balin, najwierniejszy towarzysz Thorina Dębowej Tarczy, stanął na czele znacznej grupy krasnoludów, którzy ruszyli do Morii. Pragnął na nowo zasiedlić siedzibę przodków i odnaleźć ostatni z Siedmiu Pierścieni. 
Początkowo stary krasnolud odnosił sukcesy. Wyparł plugawych orków z kopalni i rozpoczął tam intensywne prace. Przybrał też tytuł Władcy Morii. 
Piastował jednak tę godność tylko pięć lat. Balin zginął podczas przechadzki nad Jeziorem Zwierciadlanym, przeszyty strzałą z łuku orka. 
           Pochowano go w sali Mazarbul, która była jego główną kwaterą. Towarzysze Balina, wśród nich Ori i Oin, wkrótce potem ponieśli śmierć, wybici przez orków. Nikt z nich nie zdołał uciec i przekazać wieść do Samotnej Góry, tak więc przez następne lata tamtejsi mieszkańcy nie wiedzieli, co dokładnie stało się z uczestnikami wyprawy do Morii.

            Tajemnica ta została wyjaśniona dopiero w trakcie Wojny o Pierścień. Wówczas to członkowie Drużyny Pierścienia, wędrując przez Morię, trafili do sali Mazarbul i odkryli grobowiec Balina i księgę Mazarbul. 
Kronika krasnoludzkiej kolonii Balina w Morii prowadzona była w latach 2989–2994 Trzeciej Ery, od momentu przybycia krasnoludów do siedziby przodków aż do rozgromienia ostatnich członków tej grupy przez orków. Znaczna część zapisków w tej księdze była sporządzona przez Oriego, jednego z dawnych towarzyszy Thorina Dębowej Tarczy. Porzucona kronika przeleżała trzydzieści lat w Komnacie Mazarbul. Z lektury jej treści wszyscy poznali tragiczne losy Balina i jego towarzyszy. Księgę najprawdopodobniej zabrał ze sobą Gimli. Było to 15 stycznia 3019 roku.

            W ekranizacji Drużyny Pierścienia pokazano scenę odnalezienia tej kroniki, nieco ją modyfikując. Po dotarciu do komnaty i odkryciu grobowca Balina Gandalf wyjmuje księgę z rąk szkieletu jednego z krasnoludów (w powieści zostaje ona znaleziona w starej skrzyni) i zaczyna czytać jej fragmenty członkom Drużyny. W porównaniu do pierwowzoru literackiego są one zmienione i krótsze.

I tyle na dziś. Do Balina i wyprawy do Morii będę jeszcze nie raz wracał wraz z kolejnymi figurkami krasnoludów.

„To żadne lochy- zaprotestował Gimli – lecz stolica państwa krasnoludów. Kiedyś nie było tu mroku, a wszystko wypełniało światło i chwała, co ciągle jeszcze brzmi w naszych starych pieśniach“.
