Visiting a museum – Space exhibition Morgenroethe-Rautenkranz

Schon für deutschsprachige Leser ein Wortungetüm, möchte ich mir gar nicht ausmalen, welche Schwierigkeiten Leser aus Europa, Amerika und dem Rest der Welt mit dem Ortsnamen „Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz“ haben. Umlaut, „th“ und ein „z“ am Ende! Aber genau dort steht die deutsche Raumfahrtausstellung. Ich war vor zwei Jahren schon einmal hier, doch da war das Museum bereits geschlossen. Letztens fuhr ich wieder in der Nähe vorbei und hatte genug Zeit für einen Besuch!

Already for German-speaking readers a word monster, I would not even imagine what difficulties readers from Europe, America and the rest of the world will have with the name of the village „Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz“ have. Umlaut, „th“ and a „z“ in the end of it! But right there is the German space exhibition. I had been here two years ago but the museum was already closed. Not long ago I drove past nearby and had enough time for a visit!

Die Raumfahrtausstellung ist ein kleines, aber feines Museum im Geburtsort von Sigmund Jähn, dem ersten deutschen Raumfahrer. 1978, zu einer Zeit als Deutschland noch in zwei Staaten geteilt war, wurde er als Kosmonaut ausgebildet und flog zur sowjetischen Raumstation Saljut 6. Direkt vor dem Museum steht eine MIG 21-F13, die zu DDR-Zeiten von Sigmund Jähn (1963 – 1965) geflogen wurde. Ob es sich hierbei um „sein“ Flugzeug handelt, kann ich allerdings nicht sagen.

The space exhibition is a small but fine museum in the birthplace of Sigmund Jähn, the first German astronaut. In 1978, at a time when Germany was still divided into two countries, he was trained as a cosmonaut and flew to the Soviet space station Salyut 6. Directly in front of the museum is a MIG 21-F13, which was flown by Sigmund Jähn in GDR times (1963 – 1965 ). Whether it is „his“ aircraft, I can not say however.

Gleich hinter dem Eingang taucht man in die Geschichte der bemannten und unbemannten Raumfahrt ein. Neben Modellen (in unterschiedlichem Maßstäben) von Satelliten, gibt es auch die Nachbildung einer Mercury-Raumkapsel zu sehen. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Leihgabe des Deutschen Museums München. Es ist schon ein Wahnsinn zu sehen, welchen technologischen „Klapperkisten“ sich die Pioniere der Raumfahrt anvertraut haben. Interessant ist hier auch das Modell des Sänger-Raumgleiters.

Immediately behind the entrance you dive into the history of manned and unmanned space travel. In addition to models (on different scales) of satellites, there is also a replica of a Mercury space capsule to see. This is a loan from the Deutsche Museum Munich. It is already a madness to see which technological „rattling boxes“ the pioneers of space travel entrusted themselves. Also interesting is the model of the Saenger-space glider.

Zentrales Element der Raumfahrtausstellung ist die Geschichte der deutschen Raumfahrt. Das Kernstück des Musuems stellt der MIR-Simulator und seine Inhalte dar. In diesem Simulator trainierten deutsche Astronauten für ihren Einsatz in der sowjetischen, bzw. russischen, Raumstation MIR.

The central element of the space exhibition is the history of German space travel. The centerpiece of the musuem is the MIR simulator and its contents. In this simulator German astronauts trained for their use in the Soviet, or Russian, space station MIR.

Bemerkenswert zu sehen war der Vergleich von sowjetischen und amerikanischen Raumanzügen. Davon gab es nicht nur jeweils ein Exemplar, sondern das waren sehr, sehr viele! Es handelt sich hierbei um Leihgaben oder Schenkungen von Museen, Instituten, Astronauten und Kosmonauten.

Noteworthy was the comparison of Soviet and American space suits. There was not only one copy of each, but many of them! These are loans or donations from museums, institutes, astronauts and cosmonauts.

Zur Raumfahrtgeschichte gehören auch die Ursprünge. Der deutschen V2-Rakete ist ebenfalls ein Teil der Ausstellung gewidmet. Neben Erläuterungen und Modellen waren Originalexponate zu sehen. Bei diesen Ausstellungsstücken handelt es sich um Funde aus dem Konzentrationslager Mittelbau Dora. Ein immens großes Artefakt ist die  Brennkammer einer V2-Rakete.

Space history also includes its origins. The German V2 rocket is also part of the exhibition. In addition to explanations and models, original exhibits were on display. These exhibits are finds from the Mittelbau Dora concentration camp. An immense artifact is the combustion chamber of a V2 rocket.

Weiter ging es mit Ausstellungsstücken Apollo-Sojus-Testprojekts.  Die Gegenüberstellung der unterschiedlichen Ausrüstung (z. B. hier die Bordanzüge) verdeutlicht den großen Unterschied der beiden Weltmächte in der Technik. Dabei ist gar nicht einmal so klar, ob der Westen dem Osten überlegen war. Es kann sich jeder von Euch selbst ein Bild davon machen.

You continue with the Apollo-Soyuz test projects in the exhibition. The comparison of the different equipment (here for example the board suits) illustrates the great difference between the two super powers in technology. It is not even clear whether the West was superior to the East. Everyone can take a picture of yourself.

Nachdem das Museum im Geburtsort von Sigmund Jähn steht, ist „seiner“ Mission im All ein separater Bereich der Ausstellung gewidmet. Mit Sojus 29 kehrte Deutschlands erster Mann im All, auch wenn er damals für die DDR flog ;), sicher zur Erde zurück. Viele Ausstellungsstücke wurden von ihm persönlich an das Museum übergeben. Schön anzusehen ist auch das kleine Diorama, das die Landung in der sowjetischen Steppe zeigt.

After the museum is located in the birthplace of Sigmund Jähn, a separate area of the exhibition is devoted to „his“ mission in space. With Soyuz 29, Germany’s first man in space, even if he flew for the GDR , returned safely to earth. Many exhibits were personally handed over to the museum by himself. The small diorama, which shows the landing in the Soviet steppe, is also beautiful to look at.

Alles in allem ist die deutsche Raumfahrtausstellung ein kleines, aber sehr feines Museum in den östlichen deutschen Bundesländern. Wer von Euch einmal im Vogtland unterwegs ist, dem ist ein Besuch dort sehr ans Herz gelegt.

All in all, the German space exhibition is a small but very fine museum in the eastern German states. If you are traveling in the Vogtland, I recommend a visit.
